Past President of the Association of Math Teachers of New Jersey
A New Jersey resident, Deborah Ives earned an M.A.T. in Mathematics and an Ed.D. in Pedagogy in Mathematics at Montclair State University, summa cum laude. With action research in the area of the teaching and learning of mathematics as her focus, she worked closely with her Dissertation Committee Chair and Members: Dr. Evan Maletsky, Dr. Max Sobel, Dr. James Fey, and Dr. Tamara Lucas.
Deborah Ives has been a classroom teacher, K-12 supervisor, and mathematics leader in New Jersey for over twenty-five years. She was honored as a recipient of the New Jersey Governor's Teacher Recognition Award. Dr. Ives has three (3) New Jersey Certifications: K-12 Mathematics, Elementary Education, and Supervisor.
Dr. Ives has also served as a Team Facilitator in an Aeronautics, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (A-STEM) Academy in an Abbott District and as an Instructional Leader (Coach) in Mathematics, where she worked closely with teachers and students in the area of mathematics pedagogy and curriculum. In addition, she has taught Elementary Education pre-service teachers at St. Peters College in Jersey City, NJ, the College of Saint Elizabeth's in Morristown, NJ, and is currently teaching at Montclair State University.
Recommended by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Deborah Ives is currently the Lead Content Advisor to WNET/Thirteen for the Educational Multimedia Project, Get the Math (www.getthemath.org). Dr. Ives was recently an invited guest of the Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington, as a member of the Next Generation Learning Challenge Convening. The NGLC is comprised of a group of grantees preparing resources and professional development in the critical content and process areas of the Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and Language Arts Literacy.
A Past President of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey, Dr. Ives continues to serve on the Board of Trustees, providing outreach and workshops to K-12 teachers throughout New Jersey. She has also been active in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, serving as a chairperson for NCTM Regional Conferences, a frequent speaker throughout the country, and as a delegate to the NCTM Annual Conference. Additional professional memberships have included the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA), and the Association of Math Teacher Educators (AMTE).
Deborah Ives has made educational contributions as an invited curriculum writing team member for the State of New Jersey Department of Education K-12 Standards Clarification Project with Grant Wiggins, the American Diploma Project (ADP) New Jersey Algebra I Standards, K-12 Math Task Force Member 2009 with Phil Daro, NJ Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (ASK) Proficiency-Setting Panelist, and as a Special Review Assessment Advisory Task Force Member.
